Masoor Dal Recipe

  1. cook time- 20 minutes
  2. Servings- 2 to 3

  • 1/2 cup masoor dal or red lentils
  • 1 green chili
  • 1 /4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp moony dal or split skinned mung beans
  • 2 medium tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil or butter 
  • 1 red chili broken
  • 1/4 mustard
  • 1/4 tsp cumin or jaara
  • 2 garlic cloves chopped
  • 1 pinch asafoetida or hing
  • salt as needed
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp red chili powder
How To Make Masoor Dal
  1. add dal to apot or pressure cooker. wash it well a few time. add chopped tomatoes gree chili and water. tou can skip chilies if you have kids at home.
  2. pressure cook on a medium heat for 1 whistle. if cooking in a pot cook until the dal turns soft.
  3. when the pressure goes open the lid.
  4. mash it to suit your liking smooth or coarse. you can add 2 to 3tbsp water to bring it to a desired consistency.
  5. heat 1 tbsp ghee. add one after the other mustard, jaara, garlic and red chilies.
  6. when the garlic turns slightly golden, add hing, turmeric and chili powdwr. if you desire you can add a pinch of garam masala.
  7. chili powder tends to burn quickly so immediatelt pour this to the dal.
  8. keep the stove flame on a low to medium heat. 
  9. add salt and kasuri methi mix well.
  10. simmer for 2 mins and ture off the stove.
